Summer is quickly approaching... thank goodness. When we think summer, we think warm sunshine, lounging in the water, and as much time spent outside as possible. Did you know this is also the perfect time to reconsider your current skincare routine? The weather outside plays a significant role in how we should be treating our skin... and everyone living in our area knows that our summers can be hot and humid, very different from our freeeezing and dry winters. Check out these 4 simple tips to getting your best skin this summer: 1. Go light on the makeup! We all know that makeup clogs our pores. Now think about what happens when you're sitting outside in the sun and working up a sweat - your pores open up. If you have heavy makeup on, your pores aren't able to breathe; instead, they are just letting in any buildup and makeup sitting on your skin. This can clog up your pores and is a major cause of acne. If you can't imagine leaving the house for the day without foundation, that's fine! Try opting for a lightweight foundation or a tinted moisturizer (bonus points if you find one that has SPF!) to give you lightweight coverage. There are many options to choose from - Aveda has a wonderful tinted moisturizer that comes in different shades. And yes... we can totally order that for you. ;) 2. Exfoliate - But not too often! Sweat, makeup, sunscreen, and so many other factors can be really hard on our pores. This is why exfoliation is so important. Exfoliating not only works to improve your overall complexion and skin texture - it also helps to unclog your pores and get rid of all that buildup caused by sweat, makeup, and SPF. But before you begin, you shouldn't just grab any facial exfoliator and use it every morning... Did you know that there are many products out there that actually do way more harm than good? (*cough - St. Ives Apricot Scrub - cough*) Look for a gentle facial exfoliator. Again, there's a lot of good options to choose from! The #1 exfoliator we use in our spa during facials is the Micromazing 2-Minute Renewing Face Polish by Farmhouse Fresh. We always try to keep this life-saver in stock for our clients because we just can't recommend it enough. This exfoliator is light, fluffy and so gentle on your skin. Now, when should you exfoliate?? During the summer, it's best to exfoliate your face just one or two times per week. Any more than that can cause your skin to tighten up, crack, and risks damaging your pores. But don't let that scare you away from exfoliating at all, just remember 1 to 2 times weekly is the magic number! Oh, and one more important tip! Don't exfoliate sunburned skin! Wait for any sunburns to heal before exfoliating in that area. 3. Wash your face - (but again, not too often!) We all know it's important to wash your face. But are you doing it too much? When it's hot and humid, it feels good to cool yourself down and wash your face often. However, it's best to only wash your face in the morning and at night, and also after exercise if needed. Washing your face more than that can do a number on your skin. Your skin produces natural oils that create a moisturizing barrier. Washing your face too frequently will strip your face of these necessary natural oils. Looking for a new face wash? Depending on your skin type, try the New Groove Hemp Gel Cleanser or the Green Tea Milk Wash. Both are by Farmhouse Fresh and both are sold in our salon. 4. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate! I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but do you know how much water you're actually supposed to be drinking and how important it is for your skin?! 8 glasses of water is the general rule of thumb for how much we should drink daily. However, some people can do with less and other people need more. Wondering how much water your body needs? It's suggested to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water every day. When you drink enough water, you're flushing toxins out of your system. This actually has so many benefits for your skin! - keeps skin moisturized - reduces appearance of fine lines and wrinkles - reduces the risk of acne - improves skin complexion and texture Aside from only hydrating by drinking water, make sure you're using a quality facial moisturizer to hydrate your skin as well. We retail multiple facial moisturizers for each skin type in our salon - so you don't have to worry about your moisturizer being too heavy, too light, or too oily. Now that you have these 4 summer skincare tips, get out there and enjoy the nice weather! Have a summer skincare tip of your own?? Leave it in the comments! P.S.
